Stopping Marking - Calming Your Cat For Less Spraying (And a Better Smelling House!)
If you have a cat, you've probably experienced it marking something at least a few times in its life. Both of my cats marked a few corners of the house repeatedly until I figured out what exactly causes marking, and it's simpler than I thought!
It's important to make sure that your cat is spraying, and not just urinating outside of the litter box. When marking, cats don't squat down like they're urinating, instead they stand straight up and back towards what they want to mark. If your cat is urinating, that could be disease related, so take your cat to the vet!
Cats mark for a couple of reasons, the biggest of which being stress. My cats didn't start marking until I moved to my new house. They weren't used to the surroundings, and went a little nuts. When you move, especially into a much larger house, don't immediately let the cat go everywhere in the house. Start off with just letting it acclimate to one or two rooms, then slowly let it see more of the house.
If you've recently added another cat, that can cause marking as well. Cats compete with each other for territory and will set about marking all kinds of things to try and establish what's theirs. Make sure your cats are happy with each other, and you'll decrease their tendency to mark.
Make sure that your cats aren't feeling threatened in any way. If they can see other cats outside, that may cause them to start marking. Notice them staring out of the window all the time, or another cat looking back at them through the window? Try adding blinds or curtains to the window.
Fixed cats also have significantly less need to mark. If you aren't breeding cats, your cats should be fixed no matter what, just to prevent surprises that end up with more cats in rescue shelters.
