While we know a youthful dog can learn more quickly than the older dog, is it still possible for the older dog to learn new stuff? At what age could we really teach our dog?

We now are aware that a good deal of learning happens when our pup is very young and the time period from a few weeks old to five months is very important. This is the age when your pup will realize what will have an effect later on in their adult life. Really, the earlier that we can try to teach our puppies and make them understand how we would like them to behave, the more straight forward life will be for everyone.

You should try to make the most of the first very important few weeks with your puppy so that you give him the best possible start in life as well as establishing a good grounding for them. But don't worry if your dog is past this stage as there are many actions that can be done - however it will be a little harder. You must take things much slower if your dog is demonstrating habits which are unpleasant.

House training will be often one of the first things to be done when you get your pup you will want to succeed so you house doesn't get into a mess.

Do not simply let your puppy go into the garden in case he has forgotten what he needed to do - go out with him. Remember, reward him with a something special and make a big fuss of him when he does finally empty himself. Give your puppy his treat right after he does it and don't leave it until you are back in your home otherwise he will not know the reason he is being treated.

If he does not empty himself then hang around for about five minutes and do not distract him. Try and let him find his own special location in which to empty himself and let him take a little time. When your pup does need to go then watch him as you do not want him to mess in the home. Every mistake teaches your puppy the wrong habit so every time he gets it right he is learning the right way to do things.
